Vaccines and sensitive bodies

Our son is hypersensitive to corn, gluten, soy and cow's milk. This presents a large challenge in the pre-made food environment but what about the rest of life? For the 4th of July we went to a friend's house for a slip-n-slide bbq. The food looked amazing. We wouldn't know since we couldn't have any of the Korean bbq, deep fried turkey, pork, steaks, dogs, brats, burgers, bacon mac 'n cheese etc. Alton and I chowed down on the fruit plate and veggie platter. On the bright side, I won't complain because there was another baby around our son's age and she ate her bag of Cheerios. Alton ate 2 slices of watermelon, a bowl of cantaloupe, a dozen grapes, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. We did so well with our food choices but all was for nothing because gluten arrived in the most unexpected place: the slip-n-slide.

To make an amazing slip-n-slide you need a hill, a sheet of plastic, running water and dish soap. Crazy, I know. Dish soap makes all the difference in the world. A little liquid degreaser and the slide is much slipperier. I hadn't even thought about the soap until we got to the bottom of the hill and the standing water splashed up into our faces. I knew the moment the water hit him that I needed to look up soap to make sure he would be okay later. Earlier in the day I used a baby wipe to clean his top lip after making a mess with beets and he broke out from the tocopherols (corn product) in the baby wipe. Dawn liquid soap apparently has gluten in it. Our poor baby. Would I do it again? Absolutely. Some things are worth being a little sick. Our kid was giggling and having such a great time. His whole life is going to be a series of damage control procedures. We want to raise him to have fun and try not to stress over things he has no control over.

So what does that have to do with vaccines? Simple; the unknown and the dangerous are not things to be traded in for the young.
